Dr. Unghwan “Rap” Choi, Ph. D., Esq.

Dr. Unghwan “Rap” Choi, Ph. D., Esq., brings his extensive experience in international transfer pricing and valuation work to his role at the Tax Law Offices of David W. Klasing in addition to his experience as in international tax attorney. Dr. Choi has over 30 years of experience assisting both corporations and high net worth individuals in the U.S., Korea, and other nations in a number of critical tax issues, including cross-border tax planning and compliance, tax appeals and mutual agreement procedures, Advance Pricing Agreements, BEPS compliance and documentation, international estate and gift tax issues, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) advising, and valuation of companies and intangibles.

In previous years, Dr. Choi served as a principal and partner of CKP, LLP, the largest Korean American CPA firm in the United States. Dr. Choi also headed up CKP’s International Tax and M&A practices. Dr. Choi was the Partner in Charge of both CKP’s Irvine, CA office and their International Practice operated out of CKP Choongjeong, a Korean tax firm.

Before joining CKP, Dr. Choi was a partner and leader in international tax and transfer pricing for Ernst & Young in both their Los Angeles and Korea offices. Dr. Choi also was a senior partner at Kim & Chang, the largest law firm in Korea, working in their Tax and M&A department. In his earlier experience, Dr. Choi spent time with both PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and KPMG.

Dr. Choi has been selected by International Tax Review and other worldwide publications as a top tax advisor in Korea, having served as an advisor to a number of Korean government ministries. Dr. Choi is a member of the California Bar. He graduated from Seoul National University with honors. He also holds a J.D. and a Ph. D. in Economics with focuses on finance and industrial organization from UCLA. Dr. Choi is perfectly bilingual in English and Korean.
