Dentist Illegally Evaded Paying Tax, Indicted on Tax Evasion Charges

According to an indictment, Frederick G. Kriemelmeyer, 70, of La Crosse, Wisconsin, was indicted on charges relating to tax evasion. Federal prosecutors allege that the 70 year-old dentist owed a substantial amount of money to the IRS and took affirmative steps to avoid payment, even when the IRS instituted collection efforts.

The indictment indicates that Kriemelmeyer owed approximately $450,000 in unpaid federal income taxes by December 2012, but beginning a year earlier; he took various steps to evade the payment of any taxes. Kriemelmeyer allegedly asked his patients to pay for his services in cash or with checks with the payee line left blank. Additionally, Kriemelmeyer allegedly paid his personal and business expenses with cash and third party checks, obscuring the IRS’ ability to determine the true source and amount of his income. Finally, between 2013 and 2015, Kriemelmeyer failed to file tax returns altogether. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison for each count of tax evasion.

The story of the Wisconsin dentist above illustrates how a taxpayer can get behind on their tax payments and fall into a trap that is very hard to get out of. This same story has played out with celebrities, professionals like dentists, lawyers, and accountants, as well as with blue-collar wage earners. Needless to say, the IRS and state tax authorities do not discriminate based on what you do for a living. If you owe taxes and are either ignoring the payment obligation or taking affirmative steps to thwart collection efforts, charges similar to those in this case could be in your future.
