Utah Tax Professional Sentenced to Prison After Conviction for Violating Federal Tax Laws

Table of Contents

In today’s world, taxes are a complicated and often confusing subject for many people. However, when it comes to tax evasion, the consequences can be severe. According to a Department of Justice press release, one Utah-based tax preparer, Sergio Sosa, has recently been sentenced to 37 months in prison for tax evasion, conspiring to defraud the United States and obstructing the IRS’s efforts to collect his tax debt, which exceeded $1.1 million. If you have failed to file a tax return for one or more years, or have taken a position on a tax return that could not be supported upon audit, eggshell audit, reverse eggshell audit or criminal tax investigation, it is in your best interest to contact an experienced tax defense attorney.

prevent the very professional that you hire from being potentially being forced to become a witness against you,

especially where they prepared the returns that need to be amended, in a subsequent criminal tax audit, investigation or prosecution.
      • Moreover,

    only an Attorney

      • can enter you into a voluntary disclosure without engaging in the

    unauthorized practice of law

(a crime in itself). Only an Attorney trained in Criminal Tax Defense fully understands the risks and rewards involved in voluntary disclosures and how to protect you if you do not qualify for a voluntary disclosure.

Defendant Failed to Pay His Taxes, Used Nominees to Hide Funds

Sosa owned and operated a tax preparation business, Sergio Central Latino, and from 2004 to 2020, he conspired to defraud the United States by concealing his assets and income from the IRS. He also did not file his own tax returns or pay the taxes he owed from 2003 through 2017.

When the IRS audited Sosa and began efforts to collect his tax debt, he obstructed those efforts by using nominees to open business bank accounts, renaming his business and placing it in his children’s names, and making false statements to the IRS. Sosa also directed one of his children to make mortgage payments on his personal residence using funds he provided.

Appreciating the Seriousness of a Criminal Tax Investigation

It’s important to remember that the IRS takes tax evasion very seriously, and if you’re facing a similar situation, it’s crucial to seek the help of a reputable tax law firm. A professional tax law firm can help you navigate the complex legal system and protect your rights. If you have fallen behind on your taxes or have failed to file a tax return for one or more years, it is not too late to get right with the government.

The above case serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of tax evasion and the importance of seeking professional help when dealing with tax issues. Don’t take the risk, seek the help of a seasoned tax lawyer. Together, you will work to establish the pertinent facts of your case and establish a clear roadmap to follow.
