According to a Department of Justice press release, a former CEO from Jacksonville was sentenced to 32 months in prison for tax evasion. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of compliance with tax laws and the severe consequences of failing to do so. If you have failed to file a tax return for one or more years, or have taken a position on a tax return that could not be sustained upon examination, it is in your best interest to contact an experienced tax defense attorney to discuss your options to come back into tax compliance without facing criminal tax prosecution.

Defendant Used Shell Company to Avoid Paying Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars of Tax

Court records reveal that the court found that between 2015 and 2018, Jason Cory, 49, had deposited over $1.5 million from his IT services companies into a shell company that he controlled. He failed to report this income on his tax return and made false representations to cover up his actions, including misclassifying the nature of the payments that were made. Cory used the money for personal expenses and evaded paying over $600,000 in taxes.

The presiding U.S. District Court Judge ordered the former CEO to serve a term of 32 months of imprisonment. In addition, Cory was ordered to serve three years of supervised release upon the completion of his prison term. Finally, Cory was ordered to pay $606,195 in restitution to the IRS.
