Michigan Endocrinologist Sentenced to Prison After Tax Conviction

Table of Contents

According to a Department of Justice press release, a Michigan doctor was recently sentenced to federal prison after being convicted of intentionally underreporting his income for tax purposes. This story illustrates the seriousness that can result from a criminal tax investigation, prosecution, and conviction. If you have failed to file a tax return for one or more years, or have filed a tax return that you know to have been false, it is in your best interest to contact an experienced tax defense attorney to determine the best strategy to bring you back into tax compliance.

    Defendant Intentionally Underreported Income

Dr. Bashar Kiami, an endocrinologist from Roscommon, Michigan, has been sentenced to eight months in prison for tax evasion related to his solo endocrinology practice, Northern Michigan Endocrine PLLC. Court documents and statements reveal that Kiami filed corporate returns from 2014 to 2017 that underreported the practice’s gross receipts and overstated its expenses. Despite being the sole shareholder, he reported business income from the practice on his personal tax returns, fraudulently reducing his tax liability for those years. This resulted in a tax loss to the IRS of approximately $250,000.

Apart from serving a prison sentence, Kiami has been ordered by U.S. District Judge Thomas L. Ludington to undergo two years of supervised release, pay a fine of $15,000, and make a restitution payment of $59,642 to the United States. This sentence aims to hold Kiami accountable for his fraudulent actions and compensate for the tax loss to the government.

Getting Right with the Government With the Help of an Experienced Tax Attorney

This case highlights the consequences of tax evasion and the importance of complying with tax regulations. Kiami’s conduct not only violated tax laws but will likely change his and his family’s life, forever. If you have failed to file timely tax returns or have an outstanding debt with the IRS without an agreement to repay your debt in place, it is in your best interest to contact a seasoned tax attorney to get you right with the government and bring you back into tax compliance.

If you have failed to file a tax return for one or more years or have taken a position on a tax return that could not be supported upon an IRS or state tax authority audit, eggshell audit, reverse eggshell audit, or criminal tax investigation, it is in your best interest to contact an experienced tax defense attorney to determine your best route back into federal or state tax compliance without facing criminal prosecution.
